- Hand stretch film: 0–20% pre-stretch, applied manually. Higher unit consumption per pallet.
- Machine stretch film: 150–300% pre-stretch on power wrapping equipment. Dramatically lower film consumption per pallet at equivalent containment force.
A properly specified machine stretch film at 250% pre-stretch can contain the same pallet load using 60% less film by weight than hand-applied film. At high volume, this directly translates to material cost reduction and reduced dimensional weight in outbound freight.

Hand Stretch Film (Manual Application)
For operations without automated wrapping equipment, hand stretch film provides flexible, on-demand pallet protection. Key specifications:

Machine Stretch Film (Automated Wrapping)

- Gauge consistency: ±2 micron tolerance required for high-speed lines to prevent film breaks
- Core weight: Heavier cardboard cores reduce down-time from core slippage on high-speed mandrels
- Reel weight: Standard 17–23kg net weight rolls for automated dispensing systems
Colored & Specialty Stretch Film

Metallocene-Catalyzed LLDPE (mLLDPE)
Enhanced molecular structure provides superior puncture resistance and consistent stretch behavior at low temperatures. Elongation at break: 450–600%. Required for cold-chain logistics, high-altitude air freight, or sharp-edged industrial cargo where standard LLDPE film breaks occur.
Nano-LLDPE / High-Performance Blends
Emerging formulations targeting down-gauging — achieving equivalent containment force at 15–17 microns vs. the standard 20–23 micron range. Primarily relevant for buyers optimizing material cost at very high volume.

Food & Beverage Distribution
High pallet turnover environments require film that can be applied and removed rapidly. Cling level matters: too much cling causes film-to-load adhesion issues; too little causes load shift. Specify medium-cling formulations for mixed-SKU pallets.
Automotive & Heavy Industrial
Sharp metal components, uneven load profiles, and heavy (800kg+) pallets require machine stretch film at 23–25 microns minimum, metallocene-grade, with high puncture resistance specified to ASTM D1709.
Chemical & Hazmat
Certain film formulations are not compatible with aggressive chemical off-gassing. Confirm chemical compatibility before specifying stretch film for corrosive or reactive cargo.
Cold Chain & Refrigerated Logistics
